In my former corporate job, a bad day meant revenue was off, every email I read was another roadblock, I had too many meetings and no time to go pee or eat lunch, or a meeting was a major waste of time. But nobody called me the meanest mommy ever! Nobody pitched a fit – well, a few people did from time to time – but they never cried. Never kicked.

My sister-in-law recently commented that she feels she’s made the transition from mothering to parenting. Her three kids are now ages five to ten and she said she finds herself needing less to do things for them (bathing, dressing, wiping butts) and more to guide them. She gets the tough questions at the dinner table and her new challenge is to explain important life lessons.

For awhile now, I’ve been thinking about how to raise kids in a culture where music, TV, movies, toys, books and…mommy are offered on demand. How do you help your children learn patience, portion control and restraint when they can request any show or movie whenever they want it? When they expect life to be available to them on their terms? Or rather, how do I temper their wants after giving them the option?

What time do your kids get up in the morning?

 

My early bird is up around 6:30 or 7:00 Regular bird is up at 7:30, and sleepyhead is dragged out of bed at 7:45

 

Did any sleep with you last night?

 

Yes, my eight-year-old sleeps with me when my husband is traveling on business (often)

Liz splits her time between raising three children (ages 9, 6, and 2) and working as a middle school librarian. Oh, and she also co-founded Bibliotechies, a site that provides great children’s book reviews and reading lists.

 

 

What time do your kids get up in the morning?

On school days my older kids get up around 7:15 and on weekends around 8 am.  Katie wakes up EARLY – before 7am.

Kid Swap

During a play date a couple months ago, a mommy friend and I got to talking about the expense of childcare in this tough economy and ways to save. (I spent $200 to see an early movie and dinner recently – and that was on the cheap side.) Our solution? A Kid Swap once per month. On a Saturday from about 4 pm to 8 pm, one of us would take the other’s kid(s) for a play date, early dinner, PJs and movie. The kidless parents could use the time to see a movie, catch an early dinner, do stuff around the house, whatever…
